This year, Wilmington College Professor and Agriculture Department Chair Monte Anderson started a new type of landscaping around campus, using edible vegetables, fruits and herbs to decorate the surrounding areas outside the buildings on campus. Edible landscaping is a unique way to utilize the greenspace around a building, in a self-sufficient way. Many vegetable plants have beautiful flowers that most people don't see, because they don't travel to the supermarket with their fruit.
The library has the most developed plot of landscape, with tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, mustard, dill, cilantro and strawberries, to name a few, all decorating the front entrance. Anyone can harvest from the plot, as long as they write what they've taken in the log inside the entrance to the library.
This morning, Eric, our Community Outreach Coordinator, went around with Monte to tour the different gardens and plant beds around campus. They harvested dill and cilantro, and there are still several plants pulled and waiting for the taking outside the front door to the library.
