Thanks for a GREAT Pumpkin Run 5K!

The Pumpkin Run was a major success! We had a turnout of over 50 people this past Saturday which was more than we had ever hoped to achieve, this being the first year for the event. The sky was clear. The sun was bright. The weather was nearly perfect, though it was a little chilly; The night before, we saw our first frost of the season.

Runners began showing up at 8 a.m. and the race began at 9:30 to the sound of an air horn. The route traveled through residential streets around the college and then onto the nearby bike path. The final leg of the route brought runners through the rows of raised beds at the community garden, where a spread of homemade pumpkin themed snacks were waiting for them, including homemade pumpkin pie made by National Pie Championship winner, Jennifer Nystrom. The first runner to cross the finish line was Aaron Schuschu, a Wilmington College student and former Grow Food, Grow Hope Summer Associate VISTA.

Parents who brought small children were able to leave them at the new Mobile Garden Unit where they could do garden themed arts and crafts. All participants went home with a pumpkin, provided by Branstrator Farms, as well as a recipe for making pumpkin pie. 25 lucky participants also received a gift certificate to use at Chipotle in Jeffersonville, which generously provided food for the volunteers following the event.
