Home Made Composters

Saturday, January 18, 2014 Grow Food Grow Hope hosted a monthly Read and Seed for 8 local elementary children.  The youngsters listened to the story "Compost Stew" followed by a worksheet on composting and the construction of a home made composter.  The composters were made out of 2 liter

The children had an opportunity to experiment with what type of items will compost.  In the mix the children identified paper, plastic cups and orange peels.   The hope of the program was not just to introduce the children to the topic of composting, but to teach them about how to re-use every day objects.

The composters were built by cutting the 2 liter bottles in half and stacking a top (upside down) on top of a bottom.  The children filled the bottle with their compost mix and then took the bottles home.  Ideally, in the near future, the soil can be used to plant seeds.

If you are interested in attending the next Read and Seed feel free to email growfoodgrowhope@wilmington.edu.
