Preparing Your First Year Soil

1) GATHER YOUR MATERIALS
Materials: Shovel, Hard Rake, Compost, Peat Moss, Topsoil
Get your soil!: Depending on your location and the quality of the soil at your site, you will need to do more or less to amend your soil. We recommend using at least 5 bags of compost and 5 bags of peat moss to every 2 bags of topsoil you add to your plot. The compost will give your garden much need nutrients, the peat moss will keep your soil soft and help with drainage and the topsoil will add stability.

2) EMPTY YOUR BAGS
Empty the bags: Empty all of your bags evenly throughout your raised bed.

3) TURN YOUR SOIL
Turn the soil: Using a shovel, turn the soil to mix all of the different components: the compost, peat moss and top soil.

4) SMOOTH IT OUT
Smooth it out: Using your hands or a hard rake smooth out the surface of your soil so that it is even throughout the bed. You don’t want any low areas where puddles can form and drown your plants. Your soil might be a little low this first season, but it will build up over the years as you continue to amend your soil before every growing season.

5) GET READY TO PLANT!
Get ready to plant!: Once your bed is evened out you are ready to plant. Water your plot to moisten the soil and get ready to start planning your season’s worth of planting!
